On 6th april 2024, Department of Social Work in

association with Department of English and IQAC, collaborated with Banyan organised a transformative workshop centered on Neurographic art. This initiative aimed to alleviate stress, nurture creativity, and combat burnout. This workshop guided students in the intricate process of Neurographic art, yielding vibrant outcomes. Additionally, they unveiled an innovative mobile application named Hues. This platform empowers individuals to showcase their artistic endeavors encompassing diverse forms such as dance, singing, writing, and painting. This synergistic endeavor not only fostered personal growth but also celebrated the diverse forms of human expression, ushering in a new era of creative exploration and self-discovery.Let us congratulate Dr.M.Sudha,Head,Ms.K.Nivetha,Convenor and staff members for organizing the program successfully.

On March 22, 2024, the Department of Social Work orchestrated Synergetic '24, a national colloquium aimed at empowering communities to break the cycle of domestic violence through Comprehensive Prevention Strategies. Dr. S. Sakthivel, the Founder of Parivu, and Dr. Christodas Gandhi, an Ex-IAS officer, graced the event as the chief guests for the inaugural ceremony and valedictory function respectively.

 

The colloquium featured esteemed speakers such as Ms. Muskaan Ahmed, a Journalist from the Times of India; Ms. Sathya Dhanakodi, CEO of Yogithya Academy; and Mr. Melbin Baby, a Medical Social Worker from PIMS (PY). More than 50 students from various renowned colleges such as Valliammal College for Women, The New College, Anna Adarsh College for Women, DRBCCC Hindu College, SDNB Vaishnav College for Women, and Voorhees College participated in the event.

 

During the colloquium, the speakers meticulously analyzed the root causes of domestic violence and shared effective strategies aimed at breaking the vicious cycle. Moreover, they shed light on the significant influence of cultural factors on domestic violence, emphasizing the need for cultural sensitivity in addressing this issue.

 

In recognition of their exemplary efforts, DRBCCC Hindu College secured the first prize in photography, street play, and poster making categories. Additionally, Valliammal College for Women clinched the first prize in slogan writing. Both institutions were awarded cash prizes for their outstanding contributions.

 

The event served as a platform for meaningful dialogue and collaboration, paving the way for a collective effort towards creating safer and more supportive communities, free from the scourge of domestic violence.

The Department of Social Work commemorated World Social Work Day on March 19th under the theme of "Empowering Communities: Transformative Actions Towards Social Justice A panel discussion was organized for the occasion, moderated by Ms. Angelin Prince. The panelists included Ms. Teni Thomas, Trustee & Child Welfare Officer at Charis Foundation; Mr. Khalid Ahamed, Founder & President of Uravugal Trust; and Ms. Manju, Community Development Officer at TNUHDB.

During the discussion, Ms. Prince elaborated on the significance of Indigenous Wisdom in Social Work Practice. Ms. Thomas shared insights on Transformative Leadership in Social Work, emphasizing its role in driving positive change. Mr. Ahamed focused on the importance of Harmonious Coexistence and Social Justice, stressing the need for inclusive approaches. Ms. Manju highlighted Innovations in Community Development, showcasing effective strategies for addressing societal challenges.

The event also recognized Unsung Heroes in the  community, honoring individuals like Ms. Kaavathi, an auto driver; Mr. Khalid Ahamed of Uravugal Trust; Ms. Lalitha, affectionately known as Muligai Paati; and Mr. Ajay from Kottayam Cafe for their exemplary to bring in change in the society & also for acting as a catalyst  .

Furthermore, the Department acknowledged budding talents in social work by presenting awards to Mr. Vigneshwaran,Ms. Marian, and Mr. Praveen Kumar, encouraging them to continue their dedication to serving communities.Let us congratulate Dr.Sudha,Head,

On February 27th, the Department of Social Work, in collaboration with BLUENGO, IQAC, NCC, and YRC, orchestrated a sensitization program centered on Civic Engagement and Voting Rights. The event was graced by the presence of Mr. B. Ramesh, an esteemed entrepreneur and the founder/managing trustee of the Thikazh Charitable Trust, who served as the chief guest for the session.

 

Mr. Ramesh delivered an insightful discourse on the various methods of voting throughout different periods, elucidating the significance of exercising one's voting rights. He emphasized the importance of voting, shedding light on the repercussions of abstaining from this fundamental civic duty.

 

Following his address, a mock election was conducted, featuring four fictitious candidates: Rat, Crow, Buffalo, and Pig. Students were actively engaged in discerning the merits and demerits of each candidate, facilitating a deeper understanding of the electoral process. Subsequently, utilizing digital platforms, all students cast their votes, reaffirming their commitment to democratic participation.

 

 

The participation of Mr. Siva and Archana from BLUENGO further enriched the program, adding valuable perspectives to the discourse. The event concluded with a collective pledge from the students to exercise their voting rights responsibly in the future, thereby contributing to the democratic fabric of society. On 19th February 2024, PG department of Social Work in association with MGC IIC organized one-day Innovation & Entrepreneurship Outreach Program for the XI class students of Sacred Heart Matriculation Hr. Sec. School, Padi, Chennai. The program focused on building understanding on Innovation & Entrepreneurship and the ways they can be a part of it. Mr Rajesh, CEO & Founder, Daily Gurus Pvt Ltd, a young entrepreneur, addressed the students  and inspired the young minds. The session increased awareness and understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship concepts, developing critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity skills, exposure to real-world entrepreneurs, providing valuable insights and mentorship. Heartfelt thanks to the Principal Rev.Fr.Anto Edakalathur and staff members of Sacred Heart Mat.Hr.Sec.School for their support and cooperation for the successful execution of the program.

An Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been formally established between the Department of Social Work at MGC and The International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care (PCVC). This significant agreement marks a crucial step towards fostering a society that prioritizes health and safety, while concurrently promoting respect for women and actively preventing violence against them.

The MoU is poised to be a catalyst in creating a societal framework that is not only sensitive to gender-related issues but also actively works towards their prevention. Through this collaborative effort, both entities are committed to organizing sessions that will serve as educational platforms for the younger generation. These sessions aim to impart valuable knowledge on gender roles and cultivate gender sensitivity among young minds. By doing so, the MoUendeavors to contribute to the development of a community that is well-informed, empathetic, and dedicated to building a safer and more equitable future.

Media as a Tool for Social Inclusion. The distinguished speaker for the event was Mr. Praveen Chandran, an esteemed alumnus and Manager at Fedbank Financial Service Limited. During the lecture, Mr. Chandran showcased a poignant short film titled 'Neha' - A transgender's love story a creation directed by himself which emphasis on the significance of cherishing human emotions and fostering respect for all. His lecture delved into the impact of preconceived notions on social issues such as inequality, discrimination, violence, etc. Also he highlighted the pivotal role of media in sensitizing the society to these critical concerns, fostering collective awareness and positive transformation.

An Indigenous Intergenerational Sports Meet, fostering connections between elders from Dignity Foundation and students from the Department of Social Work, took place on the 17th of October 2023. The distinguished guest for the event was Mr. Padmanabhan, the Founder of SARVAM Trust, and Legal Consultant at ILLAYUGAM Trust. He graced the occasion by addressing the elders, enlightening them about their rights.

The event featured a variety of traditional activities, including Pallankuzhi, Addu Puli Attam, Parama Padam, Uri Adhi, AnjiKal, Gooli, Pamparam, and a Tyre Race. These activities served as platforms for intergenerational bonding, providing a unique opportunity for elders and students to share experiences and create lasting connections.

One of the highlights of the day was the distribution of prizes to the elders, acknowledging and celebrating their active participation in the sports meet. The occasion not only promoted physical activity but also emphasized the importance of bridging the generation gap and fostering mutual understanding between different age groups within the community.

The presence and insightful address by Mr. Padmanabhan added a meaningful touch to the event, emphasizing the significance of acknowledging and upholding the rights of elders. The Indigenous Intergenerational Sports Meet successfully achieved its goal of promoting inclusivity, respect, and a sense of community among the participants.

World Mental Health Day was observed  and  inaugural of Gregorian Centre for Social Research Excellence. The resource person was Dr. K.S. Ramesh, Deputy Director of Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health. He  spoke on the importance of mental health and the factors that influence the health seeking behaviour. He also addressed the students on resilience.  Rev. Fr. Mathew Pallikunnel inaugurated the Gregorian Centre for Social Research Excellence. Safe Space an  initiative of  the  department  was inagurated by our  Principal Dr. R. Srikanth inaugurated the Safe Space.

World Suicide Prevention Day- This initiative focused on the theme of Creating hope through action. To reflect on this, students did thought-provoking street play addressing four pivotal causative factors: academic setbacks, interpersonal relationship issues, societal misconceptions surrounding the LGBTQ+ community, and the scourge of drug addiction. Also, students provided insightful guidance on overcoming these challenging circumstances through a multifaceted approach.

Green Social Work - A seminar on "Green Social Work - Responding to Climate Change and Environmental Issues," which took place on August 18th, 2023. The seminar featured esteemed speakers, Mr. Yesave, the founder of Joyism, and Dr. Manjula Devi, the Head of Learning & Development. Both experts addressed an audience composed of Social Work students and members of the NSS (National Service Scheme).The seminar covered a range of crucial topics related to environmental concerns and their impact on society. Mr. Yesave and Dr. Manjula Devi delved into significant themes including Global Warming and its Mitigation, Climate Change and its Mitigation, Composting and Greening Buildings for a Sustainable Future, and the concept of Joy Consciousness in creating a society that is environmentally conscious and sustainable.

 SIRAM- Reinforcement activity (SIRAM)  was organised  to recognize and applaud individuals who conscientiously wear helmets while riding two-wheelers. While we often focus on raising awareness about helmet usage, we sometimes overlook the commendable efforts of those who already prioritize safety. This event which was organised in our campus aimed to shift that perspective and inspire those not adhering to helmet usage to reconsider their choices.It's important to note that individuals who were accompanied by passengers without helmets and those who carried more than one pillion rider were not considered for this appreciation initiative. The event celebrated a total of 55 individuals for their consistent commitment to wearing helmets.Token economy was implemented. token worth Rs.30 which can used in our college canteen was given.

By acknowledging responsible helmet usage, SIRAM aimed to create a positive ripple effect, motivating individuals who previously neglected helmet safety to adopt this crucial practice. The event's intention was not only to commend responsible behavior but also to encourage a broader culture  of safety on the roads.

Mind Your Mind- Workshop titled "Mind Your Mind"  was organised . The workshop was conducted by Dr. Lakshminarayan, a mental health provider, who served as the resource person for the event. During the workshop, he shed light on the crucial topic of trauma and the significance of addressing it appropriately. Dr.. Lakshminarayan also delved into the various stages of trauma, emphasizing the importance of understanding stress as more than just a psychological phenomenon.

One of the key points he highlighted was the significance of proper breathing and quality sleep in the healing process from stress and trauma. These aspects play a vital role in restoring one's mental well-being. The workshop aimed to create awareness among the students about mental health and to provide them with tools to cope with and manage stress and trauma effectively.

World Population Day- in collaboration with Social Excellence, the department  observed World Population Day (WPD) with the primary objective of raising awareness about the impact of population growth and engaging in discussions on strategies to control population rates. The event included participation from faculty members and students across various departments who took part in in-depth interviews. The interviews focused on several key aspects, including the recall of WPD posters, understanding the impact of population growth, women empowerment, the importance of education, gender equality, and proposing strategies to control population rates. The qualitative data collected through these interviews will be analysed and published with permission from the management.

On 27.9.23 First year students   from Department of Social Work and Asst Prof.Nivetha participated in inter University workshop organised by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute  for Youth Development & Sacred Heart college, Tirupatur on " Gender & Sexuality". They also performed street play.

On 12th September 2023 PG Department of Social Work - SSR, in association with the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), conducted an event in commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day. This initiative focused on the theme of Creating hope through action. To reflect on this, students did thought-provoking street play addressing four pivotal causative factors: academic setbacks, interpersonal relationship issues, societal misconceptions surrounding the LGBTQ+ community, and the scourge of drug addiction. Also, students provided insightful guidance on overcoming these challenging circumstances through a multifaceted approach.Let us congratulate the head Dr.Sudha and staff members for organizing the event successfully.
